John Reich Journal
Volume 11/Issue 2           Jan 1998          Whole 34

We have recently published Volume 11, Issue 2 of the John Reich Journal. This issue contains the following articles:

W. David Perkins has penned another article for our journal. It is titled Early Silver Dollar Die Marriages Discovered Since the 1881 Haseltine Type Table- A Detailed Analysis David has again outdone himself revealing more new information on his favorite series of bust coins. Find out which new discoveries have turned out to be proven to merely be die states of recognized varieties. Read about who has discovered new marriages in the dollar series and where they were sold. Which new marriage was actually discovered over 40 years ago? These and many other interesting facts are presented for our enjoyment.

Russell J. Logan follows with the current member census of bust quarters. The E and L counterstamped quarters are included for the first time as a separate line listing in the census. Russ also calls for the membership to send in information for our next census, the Flowing Hair and Heraldic Eagle Halves.

Jeff Prem is our next author. He writes on the 1818 O108 Inverted Edge Bust Half Dollar. This is the popular pincer 8 variety of half dollar. It is easily recognizable by the open spaces in the tops of the 8 in the date. Jeff details the characteristics of the edge dies themselves from the research of Don Gunnet. He then speculates as to the way in which this error occurred.

Stew Keen then writes an article telling us of his method of charting the A's on the reverse of the Capped Bust Half Dollars. Stew suggests that it is easier to measure the A position by extending the left side of the A's to the dentils instead of using the center of the letter. An illustration is provided as an example to the reader. He has also included a chart of some differences noted by the author.

Another of our regular contributors, Edgar E. Souders follows with his latest article A Half Dollar Promise. His story of how he obtained a couple of coins for his collection and the history of those pieces is heartwarming.

This issue of the journal ends on a sad note with the notice of Ivan Leaman's death. Ivan was one of the pioneers in Capped Bust Half Dollar research. He passed away on January 17th of this year. He co-authored with Don Gunnet an article in the 1986 Coinages of the Americas Conference held at the ANS in New York. Their research established the emission order for the capped series. His friendship and leadership will be missed by all of us in the organization.

This brings to close another copy of the John Reich Journal. Those of you who are reading this that are not members are invited to send for a complimentary copy of the journal for your inspection. Please send requests to JRCS, PO Box 135 Harrison, OH 45030, or E-mail me at Karoleffs4@Aol.com.
